Why should I learn to
dance?
Not only should everyone learn
to move well for social events, holiday parties, weddings, and other
occasions, but students have told us that by learning to dance, they
gain self-confidence, heightened self-esteem, improved posture,
friendships, a place to socialize, and many other benefits. Some
couples use it as a "date night" to get away and spend quality time
learning something together. Each person finds that dancing has
helped them in different, yet similar ways.
Am I too old to learn to
dance?
Our students range in age from pre-teen to senior citizens!
Moving to a beat and coordinating with your partner are things that are
easily learned at any age. Dancing is something that many people choose
to begin later in life. Anyone who is able to walk can dance. Dancing
is truly a skill that will last a lifetime! What better gift can
you give yourself?
How long will it take for
me to learn to dance?
This is
such a broad question. It really depends on the student's goals. Normally it
takes longer than most students may think. They realize that fact very quickly,
while taking lessons. If you’re interested in just getting around the floor
socially in just a couple of dances it may not take too long. If you're
interested in becoming an excellent dancer or a competitive dancer it would take
longer. Each student progresses at their own pace. Anyone can learn to dance
socially!!
I am very shy and am
afraid that I'll feel self conscience about dancing. Is this normal?
Everyone, including professional instructors, started from the
beginning! Each time a new student begins their lessons, we remember
what our first lessons were like. Our students are constantly telling
us how many people compliment their dancing when out at a function. The
studio is a safe and supportive environment in which to learn to dance
and there is absolutely no reason to feel self-conscious.
What should I wear for my
dance lessons?
One of the most often-asked questions by
beginners is, “ What should I wear for my dance lessons?" Here is a list of
things that may prove helpful.
Comfortable Shoes
This is important because your feet will feel the
brunt of the workout, and the last thing you need are pinching shoes.
Sneakers and sandals are not recommended
for ballroom dancing because the flat/rubber soles make them difficult to move
in on hardwood floors.
Women
Women usually wear a high-heeled shoe from
one-and-a-half to three inches. But be careful of the high
heels...if you can’t walk properly in them, then you probably will have
trouble dancing in them, too. It is better to start out with a smaller heel
and work your way up. They
should have a leather or suede bottom, which is how most proper ballroom
dancing shoes are constructed.
Men
Any dress or casual shoe works well.
They should have a leather or suede bottom,
which is how most proper ballroom dancing shoes are constructed. No
rubber soled shoes.
Comfortable Clothing
Women
Nice
black stretchy pants are perfect. If
you like to dress up, dresses and
skirts are fine, but some with a straight design/cut are too tight at the
bottom and not allow room for enough movement in some of the dances like
Waltz and Foxtrot.
Men
Slacks that fit well, and a nice shirt or
dressy tee shirt, are good choices. Suits or sport coats can be
restrictive for learning purposes, and therefore not recommended for
lessons, although look great at weddings and other formal events.
How long are your private lessons?
-
Private lessons are approximately 55 minutes long, which allows 5
minutes to take notes on the session and schedule your next appointment.
-
Group
classes are 45 minutes long.
How often should I take dance lessons?
That is entirely up to you. The
average student takes a private lesson about once a week, while others come in
several times a week. We'll develop a schedule to fit your goals.
Will I need a partner to take dance
lessons?
Though partners/couples are certainly
welcomed, they are not required. Most students in our group classes are
primarily single, and partners are rotated throughout the class if needed.
During your private lessons, your instructor may partner you.
